Permitted and Prohibited Reading Material

A person may not read weekday documents on Shabbat, such as loan and purchase contracts, bank statements, and phone and electric bills. It is also prohibited to read the prices on flyers or in shop windows.

A person may read the newspaper for informative content. However, one may not read advertisements for anything one is interested in buying, nor articles that give practical business and investment advice. Reading sad stories on Shabbat is not recommended, because Shabbat is supposed to be a joyful time. Even when reading permissible materials, a person must ensure this is not at the expense of the time that should be devoted to Torah study (26:8 above).
