When a couple unite with love and joy, they connect with the very root of life. A spark of the divine rests upon them, and the entire world is blessed with life and joy. Therefore, our Sages tell us that people should sanctify themselves before engaging in this mitzva. This means each person should think about how to please their partner and put their partner’s enjoyment before their own. The greater their mutual enjoyment, the greater their mitzva fulfillment. Other suggestions for how to fulfill this mitzva include complimenting one’s spouse often, respecting them, and caring for them in all aspects of life.
