Why Women Light the Shabbat Candles

The mitzva to light Shabbat candles applies to all Jewish adults – men and women, singles and marrieds – since everyone is obligated to honor and enjoy Shabbat. However, within a family, the woman of the house takes precedence for this mitzva. This is because domestic harmony is primarily dependent upon her, and it is thanks to her that the home is permeated with the light of faith and Torah.

Because this mitzva is so beloved, many women use beautiful silver candlesticks. The Sages tell us that those who are meticulous about lighting Shabbat candles will be blessed with learned children who will add light to the world through their Torah study and good deeds. Therefore, after lighting the candles, many women pray for their children to be virtuous and learned.
