According to Torah law, the shofar is blown even if Rosh Ha-shana is on Shabbat. However, the Sages abolished shofar blowing on Shabbat, because they were concerned people might carry the shofar in the public domain, thus desecrating Shabbat. This teaches us the magnitude of Shabbat’s sanctity – because of the mere possibility of its desecration, the Sages abrogated a Torah mitzva.
