Crowning God King

The primary theme of the Rosh Ha-shana prayers is crowning God king. This exemplifies the Jewish approach. We do not devote the Day of Judgment to praying for all the things we personally need and spend the year worrying about, such as health and financial stability. Rather, on this holy day we express our deepest wish – for God’s kingship to be revealed and for the world to be repaired and redeemed with kindness and justice. This is also why we do not confess our sins on Rosh Ha-shana. Confession is part of the process of correcting an individual’s sins. The rest of the Ten Days of Repentance is dedicated to this process, but Rosh Ha-shana is dedicated to the collective goal of perfecting the world under the sovereignty of God.
