Reward and Punishment in the World to Come

The completion of justice for the righteous and the wicked occurs in the World to Come, also called the World of Truth. In contrast to this world, where falsehood dominates, the true status of each person and the real worth of his or her deeds is clear in the World to Come.

The World to Come has two phases. The first phase begins with death, when each soul returns to the world of the souls. There, the righteous ascend to heaven to receive reward according to the value of their mitzvot, while the wicked descend to hell to receive punishment in accordance with their sins. As for those who were wicked but also made efforts to observe some mitzvot, they are still punished but ascend to heaven afterwards. The second phase of the World to Come will take place after the world is perfected. Then, with the resurrection of the dead, souls will permanently reunite with bodies, and soar to infinite heights (34:4-5 below).
