Divorce in Jewish law is performed by giving a get, a divorce document written for the couple by a scribe. Two witnesses must sign the document, and the husband must give it to his wife in front of two witnesses. As soon as the wife receives the get, she is divorced. Along with the giving of the get, the couple also must finish dividing up their assets, and the husband must pay the wife the amount of the ketuba. If she is at fault in the divorce, he does not need to pay it. The financial details are complicated and may need to be brought to a rabbinic court.
