The Torah prohibits other types of mixing as well. In the Land of Israel, it is prohibited to plant a field with two types of seeds together. Rather, each must be separate, as it says, “You shall not sow your field with a mixture (kilayim)” (Leviticus 19:19). This prohibition includes edible grains, legumes, and vegetables. It does not include decorative or medicinal plants. Furthermore, the prohibition is limited to annuals. There is no problem with planting a variety of trees together, or planting fruit trees with annuals. Trees are so large they are not considered to be mixed with other trees or plants.
