Equality and the Right of Ownership

Let us review. Both equality and the right of ownership are based on the fact that human beings were created in the image of God. Since this means that people have free choice and are responsible for their actions, and since they have the ability to take care of the world and to improve it, it follows that what they create or buy belongs to them. Since every person is created in the image of God, it follows that every person has equal rights and equal responsibilities. This equality includes national concerns such as dividing the land and obligations such as serving in the army. It also includes equality before the law, as it says, “You shall have one standard for stranger and citizen alike; for I the Lord am your God” (Leviticus 24:22).
