The blessings over Torah study prepare us to learn Torah by putting it in the context of faith. The Sages tell us that one of the reasons for the destruction of the Temple was because people did not recite blessings before studying Torah. This means people’s approach to the Torah was wrong. They studied it as if it were just one more subject, rather than God’s teachings. As a result, their study did not succeed in bringing blessing to the world or preventing exile.
