The Ideal Justice System

The vision of our redemption includes the return of the original ordination and the reestablishment of the Sanhedrin. The members of the Sanhedrin must be Torah scholars who are also knowledgeable in a variety of fields, particularly economics, sociology, and anthropology. (This is an interpretation of the traditional requirement for a Sanhedrin member to know “70 languages.”) These sages will clarify Torah law in a way that fits contemporary economics and society, and they will gradually restore Torah law to its proper place. The Knesset’s legislation and public policy will continue to apply, but the Sanhedrin will work together with elected officials to decide what needs to be refined and what needs to be replaced. At the same time, they will make sure to protect everyone’s human rights, so that no one is harmed by the process of improving the justice system.

In the meantime, the more judges give weight to Torah values, and the more Torah scholars, jurists, and economists work to clarify what the Torah would ideally say, the more progress will be made toward the grand vision of a Torah justice system – a system which will uplift society and lead to truth and peace.
