In order to enable people to freely choose their path, God set the world to operate according to the laws of nature, destiny, and probability. These laws apply equally to both righteous and the wicked. This is reflected in the various genes people carry and in the different environments they live. As a result, there are righteous people who have flawed genes and who die young from illness and wicked people who have healthy genes and live long pleasant lives. Similarly, the chances of people becoming rich or poor are largely dependent upon the circumstances of their upbringing.
Without such variables, free choice would be impossible. For if every sinner suffered an instant heart attack or financial loss, or if every person doing a mitzva received financial gain or other benefits, everyone would obey the divine commandments to avoid punishments and receive rewards. The unique attributes of humans who are created in the image of God would not be expressed. Only when people choose good for the ‘sake of heaven’ – to do what is truly good and not to receive instant reward, do they develop their positive character traits and deepen their understanding. This is what enables them to take part in repairing and improving the world. Therefore, most reward and punishment is not clearly revealed in this world. There are righteous people who suffer from hardship, and wicked people who enjoy the good life. This system offers every person a real choice.
