Durante Sukkot, Dio decide quanta pioggia ci sarà nell’anno a venire. Poiché tutta la vita, vegetale, animale e umana, dipende dall’acqua, preghiamo ampiamente per essa nell’ultimo giorno del giudizio. Molte delle preghiere includono le parole ebraiche “hosha-na” (per favore salvaci). Da qui il nome del settimo giorno è Hoshana Rabba, che significa il Grande Hoshana. C’è un altro modo per intendere Hoshana Rabba come un giorno di giudizio celeste. Anche se il verdetto di tutti viene registrato (“scritto”) a Rosh Ha-shana e finalizzato (“sigillato”) a Yom Kippur, la direttiva per eseguirlo avviene solo a Hosha-na Rabba.
