Ci sono due motivi per questo divieto: 1. Preservare il carattere dello Shabbat come giorno di santità e riposo. Anche le mani devono essere a riposo e dovrebbero toccare solo oggetti connessi allo Shabbat. 2. Stabilire una salvaguardia. Se una persona trasportasse oggetti nello Shabbat nello stesso modo in cui lo fa nei giorni feriali, potrebbe finire per compiere una melakha con essi o trasportarli in un dominio pubblico.
